Sean R. Anderson (Ph.D.)

My research seeks to better understand marine microbes, how they interact with each other and their environment, and the consequences of these relationships on biogeochemistry and ecosystem health. Most recently, I was an NSF Postdoctoral Fellow in the Center for Chemical Currencies of a Microbial Planet (C-CoMP) program, where I studied plankton parasites in the Harvey lab at the University of New Hampshire. This work involved employing multiple omics tools to characterize metabolites released during protist parasite infection and examine the response of heterotrophic bacteria to labile carbon. Overall, I enjoy merging field and lab approaches, with molecular techniques and bioinformatics to better explore microbial life in the oceans. While I am a microbial ecologist at heart, I have also applied molecular tools to study environmental DNA of fish and invertebrates.

Pics from the lab/field

I have been lucky to conduct field work around the world with some awesome people, from setting up dilution experiments in Antarctica and Norway to collecting omics samples in the Gulf of Mexico, Biscayne Bay, and Skidaway Estuary. Here are some snapshots of field and lab work.
